Blancpain GT Series Asia gains first Japanese team

CarGuy Racing will become Blancpain GT Series Asia’s first Japanese entrant when it competes at Suzuka and Fuji Speedway later this year.

The championship is currently focused on next weekend’s rounds at Chang International Circuit in Thailand (May 20/21), but is already receiving interest from Japanese GT3 teams eager to compete for overall victories on home soil.

CGR is the first of the local race-by-race entries to commit to Blancpain GT Series Asia’s debut in Japan. Best known for organising supercar events, CGR has since progressed to running a Lamborghini Huracan GT3 in selected races and championships.

That same car is now heading to Blancpain GT Series Asia with a Pro/Am line-up comprising team owner Takeshi Kimura and Kei Cozzolino.

Kimura is the driving force behind CarGuy in Japan where he began racing three years ago. In 2015 he finished second in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia Am class standings before taking in selected Super Taikyu rounds. At Suzuka and Fuji he’ll combine his Blancpain GT Series Asia programme with further Super Trofeo outings.

His 29-year-old co-driver Cozzolino boasts a rich racing CV that features Macau GP, Japanese F3, Super Formula and Super GT experience. The Italian-Japanese is currently contesting the Asian Le Mans Series with another of Lamborghini’s Blancpain GT Series Asia teams, Vincenzo Sospiri Racing.

Blancpain GT Series Asia is eager for more Japanese GT3 teams and drivers to follow in CGR’s footsteps by joining its grids at Suzuka and Fuji.

The championship’s inaugural season continues at Chang International Circuit next weekend before the first event of its Japanese double header takes place at Suzuka on June 24/25. Fuji follows two months later on August 19/20.
