With the new 992-generation of the 911 road car unveiled at the LA Auto Show, Porsche also announced a last hurrah for the outgoing model, a hardcore track-only version of the GT2 RS.
The 911 GT2 RS Clubsport is largely similar to the road car, sharing its 700bhp, 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat six and seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, as well as the stability control and ABS systems.
The Clubsport gains a number of features to optimize it for the track, however. The road car’s ceramic brakes are replaced with slightly smaller ventilated and grooved steel discs – 390mm at the front and 380mm at the rear. The aluminum monobloc racing calipers have six pistons in the front and four in the rear.
A roll cage, racing bucket seat and a six-point safety harness ensure safety, while a carbon steering wheel and a color display from the 911 GT3 R give drivers optimal control.
As befits a racing car, the Clubsport also receives a host of aerodynamic upgrades, including a huge rear wing, redesigned air inlets, a more aggressive diffuser and a racing exhaust silencer with twin centrally-mounted tailpipes.
The 911 GT2 RS Clubsport is not currently homologated for the road or any racing series, but Porsche is holding talks with race organizer SRO. Dr Frank-Steffen Walliser, vice president motorsport and GT cars at Porsche described the discussions as “very productive”.
