Introduced by Ford, the F-150 Lightning Switchgear is a new addition to Ford’s Performance Demonstrator program, which aims to demonstrate the potential of electric trucks on and off the road. Crafted in collaboration with RTR Vehicles and inspired by the F-150 RTR Ultimate Fun-Haver project vehicle from 2016, Switchgear has custom carbon bodywork with Ford Performance 2024 livery.
Switchgear is a concept vehicle and is not commercially available. According to Ford, the vehicle aligns itself with the likes of the SuperVan 4.0 and 4.2, Mustang Mach-E 1400, Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 and the F-100 Eluminator, all of which were designed to showcase the possibilities of EVs.
Designed to withstand off-road terrains, the vehicle is equipped with an augmented track width, heightened ground clearance and an advanced suspension system. The integration of Fox 3in-diameter internal bypass shock absorbers, front and rear bumpers and a custom independent double-wishbone suspension at the front, also attempt to increase off-road readiness.
What’s more, the Switchgear externally features carbon composite front fenders, bedsides and a rear bumper cover, complemented by steel fabricated rock rails and a front skid plate. Outfitted with Nitto Ridge Grappler 37×12.5R18 tires and a distinctive chase rack housing two spare wheels/tires, Ford claims the truck is tailored for versatility.
For those eager to witness the Switchgear in action, its premiere is scheduled for January 25 at the King of the Hammers off-road racing event in Johnson Valley, California.
