Battery technology company About:Energy has partnered with McMurtry Automotive, an electric vehicle (EV) developer, to improve battery lifetime and performance for the McMurtry Spéirling and Spéirling PURE customer cars.
The collaboration aims to merge EV expertise, battery testing and modeling to improve the battery technology of McMurtry’s vehicles by using the latest high-performance Molicel P50B battery.
The Molicel P50B uses a 5.0Ah 21700 form factor lithium-ion cell and has a density of 260Wh/kg (714Wh/l).
About:Energy will model the battery cell behavior and characterize the P50B cell’s performance, with the aim of enabling McMurtry engineers to integrate About:Energy’s data into the design and simulations of its battery packs, for efficient fast charging and increased cycle life performance.
Gavin White, CEO and co-founder of About:Energy, said, “We’re working in parallel with McMurtry on the quickest and most in-depth battery knowledge transfer to date to accelerate the development process of McMurtry’s vehicles.
“Our aim is to build better batteries and accelerate timelines by reducing reliance on physical testing.”
Kevin Ukoko-Rongione, chief engineer at McMurtry Automotive, added, “Working with About:Energy feels like an extension to our in-house team. Their engineers are proactive in supporting us to make the most of the battery data and insights obtained from their world-class testing facilities.”
As part of the partnership, McMurtry’s engineering team has access to enhanced data and virtual tools, including workshops to support and familiarize themselves with the testing process, and data outputs needed to optimize battery designs and EV performance.
