Ginetta has debuted the production version of the Akula supercar, based on a concept from 2019. Priced from £275,000 (US$360,200) plus taxes and shipping, the 600bhp V8 supercar celebrates the 20th anniversary of Dr Lawrence Tomlinson’s acquisition of Ginetta and will be limited to 20 units.
Weighing 1,190kg, the Akula is powered by a 6.4-liter NA V8 engine developing 600bhp at 7,200rpm and 670Nm of torque at 5,100rpm. These figures translate to a 0-100km/h time of 2.9 seconds with a top speed of 290km/h. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual transmission mated to a triple-plate clutch or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, both paired with Ginetta’s limited-slip differential.
Stopping prowess comes from 360mm ventilated steel discs, both front and rear, with four-pot calipers supported further by an advanced ABS. Carbon ceramic brakes, six-point Ginetta racing seat harnesses and Ginetta racing apparel, including a racing suit, boots, gloves and underwear will come as an option with the race pack.
Construction of the Akula features an ultra-high-strength carbon monocoque with carbon front and rear subframes. To improve rigidity, Ginetta has also thrown in a steel motorsport roll cage fabricated to high standards. In terms of aerodynamics, Akula takes inspiration from the Ginetta G61-LT-P1 LMP1 race car along with a carbon flat floor with a front splitter, turning vanes, rear wing and rear diffuser.
The 6.4-liter V8 is positioned strategically (50:50) to improve dynamics; the spaces in front of the front axle and behind the rear axle are devoid of major components and reserved exclusively for aerodynamics. This design also enables a range of geometry setups and significantly enhances the kinematic operating range of the suspension. Additionally, the Akula comes with an electric power steering system with a competition steering rack.
The suspension features a classic racing double-wishbone setup for both front and rear. Other highlights include billet aluminum uprights and pushrod-actuated, two-way-adjustable racing suspension with dampers that can be electrically controlled. The front and rear racing anti-roll bars offer full mechanical adjustment to refine the car’s suspension setup for track conditions. For rubber, the Akula comes shod with 265/35/20 and 305/35/20 Pirelli P Zero tires wrapped on 9.5 x 20in and 11 x 20in Ginetta aluminum racing wheels.
Tomlinson commented, “Anyone can build a fast car, but at Ginetta we create vehicles that leave their drivers breathless and wanting to drive them again and again. Unlike anything else on the road, the Akula is designed and engineered to be driven to, around and back from a track like the Nürburgring, having the luggage space to do so, while delivering an unmatched, intense and engaging driving experience every step of the journey.”
To help make it practical, Ginetta has equipped the Akula with a 100-liter fuel tank providing an estimated 725km driving range and a 473-liter trunk capacity. Other highlights include an electronically adjustable steering column and pedal box, a touchscreen infotainment system that supports full iOS integration, heated front windshield, cupholders and wireless phone charging.
