Japanese truck manufacturer Hino Motors has released details of its 2022 Dakar Rally entry.
Based around a Hino 600 medium duty truck, the most notable feature of the vehicle is its use of a hybrid powertrain. The 8.9-liter, straight-six diesel produces 789bhp, which is augmented by a 276bhp hybrid system, utilizing a Dana TM4 motor, pushing the total power output over 1,000bhp. Drive is transferred via a 6-speed, automatic transmission to all four wheels, with the use of locking differentials at each axle.
In previous years, Hino has gone with cab-over chassis designs, based on its 500 series trucks, but for 2022, the decision has been made to run with a conventional cab design featuring a hood. With testing complete in Japan, the truck is due to undergo testing in Saudi Arabia ahead of the Dakar event.
