Toyota is paying homage to the Celica GT-Four rally car of yesteryear with a modern version based on the GR86. The concept on show at SEMA borrows the engine and AWD drivetrain from the GR Corolla.
Toyota said it was challenging to modify the GR86’s chassis to fit the GR Corolla’s taller, transverse-mounted G16E-GTS engine and the GR-Four AWD drivetrain. While the G16 engine eventually fit within the engine bay and transmission tunnel, some modification of the front of the chassis was required, along with a custom subframe and engine mounts.
Converting the GR86 from RWD to AWD also required significant modification of the front suspension to incorporate GR Corolla hubs, spindles and axles to send power to the front wheels. Custom coilovers were bolted onto each corner with custom control arms to support the new subframe modifications. Additional adjustments were also made to the steering rack to improve feel and clearances.
Toward the rear, it features a GR Corolla differential and housing to maintain factory gear ratios, electronics functionality and power distribution. The GR Corolla rear axles also required modification to fit properly.
The G16 engine benefited from a host of upgrades, including a performance intercooler, an oil cooler to reduce engine oil temperatures and a race ECU to ensure accurate fuel delivery, spark timing, boost control and sensor monitoring throughout. Toyota states that the concept develops similar figures to the GR Corolla – 300hp and 273 lb-ft – but there is potential to increase these numbers with tuning.
Aesthetically, there’s a Candy Halo White paint scheme with a heritage-inspired red and green color palette with modern Toyota and Toyota Gazoo Racing logos. Other exterior highlights include large red rally mudflaps, a custom exhaust, white Speedline wheels and a Celica GT-Four-inspired spoiler.
The cabin features a full cage in bright white with racing seats complete with red six-point racing harnesses, aligning with Toyota Gazoo Racing’s color scheme.
“The aim is to evoke memories of the legendary rally car that enthusiasts have admired on rally stages and in popular racing video games,” said Paul Doleshal, general manager of motorsports and assets at Toyota Motor North America.
