Toyota Australia is set to enter the Repco Supercars Championship with the GR Supra from 2026. The Japanese brand has committed for five years and will be the third car maker to commit to the Supercars Gen3 era, following Ford and Chevrolet.
Toyota has teamed with Walkinshaw Andretti United as its homologation partner to run two Supras driven by Chaz Mostert and Ryan Wood. The second team is yet to be announced.
The GR Supra will use Toyota’s 2UR-GSE all-aluminum, quad-cam, naturally aspirated V8 as its baseline engine. This engine can be found in numerous Lexus F models such as the IS F, GS F and LC500 as well as the 2019 Dakar-winning HiLux. Toyota Australia has commenced initial design work on the Supra race car through its team in Altona in Melbourne. A scale clay model developed using CAD and VR technology was displayed at the launch.
Toyota is already involved in World Endurance Championship, the World Rally Championship, NASCAR, its own Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia (TGRA) Scholarship Series, GR Cup and the TGRA Rally Team alongside Neal Bates Motorsport.
Toyota Australia’s vice president of sales, marketing and franchise operations, Sean Hanley, said “This is truly an historic moment. Our GR brand and performance cars were built on the knowledge that we gain from participating in top-level motorsport and our entry into the Supercars Championship will cement that connection and give us the opportunity to showcase Toyota Gazoo Racing excitement to a wide audience of passionate fans.”
Supercars CEO Shane Howard added, “This is an incredible honor, to welcome Toyota to the Repco Supercars Championship from 2026. It’s a testament to the immense popularity and international appeal of our sport that a powerhouse like Toyota has chosen to join our grid.”
