FAT International and the Smedley Group have partnered to launch the FAT Karting League (FKL), an initiative designed to make motorsport accessible to young racers. FKL’s focus is on inclusivity and affordability and sets “a new benchmark for the sport”, the companies say.
The FAT Karting League is designed to break down the financial and logistical barriers that make motorsport inaccessible. A season of fixed cost racing at the best tracks in the UK starts from £3,800 (US$4,805) for drivers from age six, and the Junior Pro Series is priced at £5,300 (US$6,700), making it 96% percent cheaper than the current drivers on the path to F4, which costs an average of £125,000 (US$158,100).
The FKL features outdoor racing using modern electric karts designed by F1 engineers. These karts can achieve speeds of up to 60mph, combining the latest EV technology with zero tailpipe emissions for an exceptional racing experience. Each championship consists of nine rounds, with two categories – Regional and Pro Championships – held at some of the best tracks in the UK such as Whilton Mill and Buckmore Park.
Top racers from each global hub will compete in the FAT World Finals, with the champion rewarded with a fully funded racing seat in the FIA British F4 Championship for all rounds of the 2026 series. This prize offers young racers a direct route to professional motorsports, providing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
The FAT Karting League is set to launch its first hub in the UK in January 2025. In early Q2 2025, FKL will expand to the USA with the opening of two new hubs. These launches mark the beginning of a global expansion, reinforcing FKL’s mission to deliver inclusive and affordable racing experiences to a diverse and growing audience worldwide.
Rob Smedley, CEO of Smedley Group, said, “This initiative is something I’m deeply passionate about, and with FAT and Four Gardens Motorsport’s partnership, we will drive huge change to break down barriers to make motorsport both accessible and inspiring for all.”
Ferdi Porsche, CEO of FAT International, said, “Our mission is simple: to open the doors to motorsport for everyone. With the FAT Karting League, we’re breaking down barriers and creating a platform where talent and passion can thrive, no matter where you come from.”
