Formula Student has announced plans to launch the UK’s first autonomous racing car competition for undergraduates. The event will take place at Silverstone in July.
Six UK universities will enter autonomous cars in Formula Student Artificial Intelligence, which is run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, giving participants the opportunity to build, design and race cars.
“The AI event leads the way in supporting the UK automotive industry, where there is growing demand for electronics and software skills to support connected and autonomous vehicle manufacturers and their supply chain,” said Dr Colin Brown, CEO of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
Formula Student AI has benefitted from access to an autonomous driving system–dedicated vehicle (ADS-DV) prototype.
The prototype lowers the barrier to entry for teams who do not have the resources to design and build a running vehicle but have the software, mechatronics and automation engineers for control algorithms.
