Now in its 25th year, the IMechE Formula Student competition is set to feature two teams sponsored by Mahle Powertrain. During the competition, teams must produce and develop prototype single-seat race cars that meet physical and commercial targets ahead of being subjected to a challenging testing program.
For 2023, Mahle Powertrain will sponsor previous winners Cardiff Racing and the University of Nottingham Racing Team.
“We’re delighted to be sponsoring two outstanding teams from Cardiff University and the University of Nottingham – a commitment we’ve made for the next two years – and we look forward to supporting them in their efforts as they develop their cars, each with its own innovative strategy,” said John Hollingworth, sales and marketing director, Mahle Powertrain.
Cardiff University will develop electric and internal combustion race cars. The team plans to use an in-house-designed 600V battery pack in addition to Mahle’s Jet Ignition pre-chamber ignition technology.
The University of Nottingham’s new 2023 vehicle will feature a custom 15Ah battery pack with an active air-cooling system and custom silicon-carbide-based motor drivers.
Throughout the competition, Mahle Powertrain will allow both teams to use its facilities, including the company’s chassis dynos and full engine test rigs. The company will also provide engineering support.
The Formula Student event will be held at the Silverstone Circuit in the UK on July 19-23, 2023. A total of 130 student teams from across Europe will compete.
