Formula E once again has a support series after a four-year hiatus following the demise of the I-Pace eTrophy. The NXT Gen Cup, which had its debut season in 2023, will now run (subject to final FIA approval) at the four European rounds of this year’s Formula E championship: Misano, Monaco, Berlin and the season finale in London.
The series is aimed at providing an entry point to electric racing for young drivers.
Series founder Fredrik Lestrup remarked, “For NXT Gen Cup to go from an idea on paper less than two years ago to racing together with the ABB FIA Formula E and DTM this year is mind-boggling and inspiring proof of the hard work by everyone involved.”
The series runs spec cars based around a Mini Cooper SE chassis, developed for racing by Lestrup Racing. The cars have an all-in weight of 1,150kg, are front-wheel drive, and have a 180bhp output that can be boosted to 60bhp as a push-to-pass function. The electric drive runs at 800V, with a 30kWh battery capable of charging at 60kW, and regen available during races.
