The FIA has made revisions to the Right of Review provisions within the 2024 International Sporting Code. These changes aim to streamline the process and address concerns raised by the motorsport community regarding the previous system.
The amendments now restrict the window for submitting a Right of Review request to 96 hours after the conclusion of the competition, with a potential 24-hour extension at the stewards’ discretion. Previously, this window was set at 14 days.
The Right of Review is an important tool for competitors, officials and the ASN. The FIA has introduced a fee for submitting such requests. This fee, equivalent to the relevant protest fee for the event, aims to deter frivolous requests and ensure that only significant and relevant new elements are considered.
To further expedite the process and minimize delays in result publication, officials are now expected to review and provide a decision within seven days of receiving a Right of Review request.
During the 2023 season, several teams, including HAAS, Aston Martin, McLaren and Mercedes, submitted Right of Review requests, with only Aston Martin’s being successful. In 2024, teams will now be required to pay a non-refundable fee of €6,000 upfront, regardless of the outcome of the appeal.
The International Sporting Code specifies that the deposit accompanying the review request must be set annually by the parent ASN or the FIA, and it may only be returned if the Right of Review is upheld, unless fairness dictates otherwise.
These changes apply to all FIA-sanctioned events, including Formula 1, aiming to ensure a fair and efficient process for all parties involved.
