Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) is to enter a four-crew team in the 2022 Dakar Rally, running an all-new version Toyota GR DKR Hilux T1+, developed to meet updated regulations for the T1 category. TGR says that the prototype car is currently undergoing testing in preparation for an official launch later this year.
The latest iteration of the Hilux will share components with the race-proven base vehicle introduced in 2018, which went on to win the Dakar in 2019, but will also feature adaptations including 37in tires, up from 32in, and an increase in tread width from 245mm to 320mm. The car also has longer suspension travel with the previous limit of 280mm now increased to 350mm.
Under the bonnet, the Hilux is now equipped with a 3.5-liter twin-turbo powered petrol V6 engine, sourced from the GR-S version of the new Toyota Land Cruiser 300. In standard form, the engine produces 305kW at 5,200rpm and 650Nm of torque from 2,000rpm. TGR has not disclosed its output in racing trim.
