Volkswagen Motorsport SA has announced that it will enter the 13th Simola Hillclimb in South Africa on May 4-7 with the 419kW Polo R WRX Supercar and former rallycross driver Petter Solberg at the wheel.
The Polo R WRX Supercar has achieved two Drivers’ titles and two Teams’ FIA World Championship wins during the modern Rallycross era. The thoroughbred hot hatch race car features a heavily modified four-cylinder engine capable of a peak power output of 419kW and 650Nm at 5,000rpm. Delivering power to the wheels in a sequential 6-speed transmission which enables the Polo R WRX to complete 0-100km/h in 1.9 seconds.
“We are very excited to announce that Petter Solberg will be making his way to South Africa to race in the Polo R WRX Supercar,” said Mike Rowe, head of Volkswagen Motorsport. “We are thrilled to have Petter come out of retirement to race for us in South Africa.”
Competing alongside the Polo R WRX Supercar will be Volkswagen Motorsport drivers Jonathan Mogotsi and Daniel Rowe in the OEM’s latest Golf 8R. The R-badged vehicle is powered by the EA 888 engine which delivers 235kW and 400Nm. Graeme Nathan will also represent Volkswagen at the event in the Polo SupaCup racing car.
