Venturi Formula E has announced that Rohm Semiconductor will become a global sponsor for the brand. This partnership is a big step for the semiconductor manufacturer, which has supplied SiC (silicon carbide) power devices to Venturi since season three.
The cutting-edge technology developed for both e-mobility and the race track enables an increase in the effectiveness of the power electronics system in the Venturi Formula E cars, further highlighting the Japan-based company’s commitment to the development of power and energy management systems.
Thanks to material that can withstand higher electric fields than conventional silicon, SiC technology is able to reduce power loss and increase temperature resistance for the inverter.
As technical partner to the Formula E team, Rohm claims its power-management technologies are the key to success in the all-electric racing series.
Bringing SiC technology to e-mobility in general is the next step for the manufacturer, once the technology has been proven within motorsport, SiC power semiconductors will make their way into serial production.
