After winning both the drivers’ and manufacturers’ championships in its first season of BTCC, the BMW 330i M Sport campaigned by West Surrey Racing (WSR) won the coveted International Race Car of the Year Award at the 2019 Professional MotorSport Awards.
The car marks a return to BTCC for the BMW 3 Series, after WSR ran a 1 Series for several years. The new G30 3 Series-based car has achieved great success in only its first year, with BMW drivers Colin Turkington and Andrew Jordan placing first and second in the driver’s championship, and BMW and WSR winning the manufacturers’ championship.
Team founder and principal Dick Bennetts came down to Cologne, Germany, to accept the award, and described the mad dash to get the car ready: “We actually only got delivery of the shells from Munich at the end of November, and 15 weeks later, we had three cars running, one day before the media day. To get to the first round and for [Andrew Jordan] to win a race was incredible!”
